What is Root Canal Treatment?

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing inflammation or infection.

Root canal treatment removes the affected pulp, then cleans, shapes, disinfects and seals the canals inside the root. The tooth is then rebuilt, often with a crown.

Why it may be needed

  • Severe or lingering toothache
  • Pain or sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the trigger is removed
  • Swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gum
  • A tooth that has darkened after an injury
  • Deep decay reaching the nerve

How is it done?

A general outline. Your own steps depend on your examination and are explained to you before treatment.

  1. Examination & X-rayThe dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see the roots and any infection.
  2. Numbing the toothLocal anaesthesia is used so the area is numb during treatment.
  3. Cleaning the canalsThe infected or inflamed pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected.
  4. Filling & sealingThe canals are filled and sealed, and a temporary or permanent filling closes the tooth.
  5. Restoring the toothMany back teeth are protected with a crown afterwards, followed by a review.

Root Canal Treatment: frequently asked questions

Have another question? Message us on WhatsApp.

Is root canal treatment painful?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain during treatment. The tooth may be tender for a few days afterwards.
How many visits are needed?
It is often completed in one to three visits, depending on the tooth and how much infection is present. A crown may need an additional visit.
Do I need a crown afterwards?
Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often weaker and are usually protected with a crown. The dentist will advise based on how much tooth remains.
What happens if I don't get it treated?
An infected tooth does not heal on its own. The infection can spread and cause swelling and pain, and the tooth may eventually need to be removed.
Is extraction a better option?
Keeping the natural tooth is usually preferred where it can be saved. If it can't, the dentist will discuss extraction and options to replace the tooth.
When should I call the clinic?
Call the clinic if you have severe pain, swelling of the face or gums, or a fever with dental pain. Emergency appointments are taken on call.
