What is Periodontal Treatments?

Gum disease starts when plaque builds up along the gum line. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen and may bleed. This stage can usually be reversed with professional cleaning and good daily care.

If it is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis. Pockets form between the teeth and gums, and the supporting bone can be lost over time. Periodontal treatment aims to control the infection and stop further damage.

Why it may be needed

  • Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gums pulling back from the teeth
  • Teeth that feel loose or have shifted

How is it done?

A general outline. Your own steps depend on your examination and are explained to you before treatment.

  1. Gum examinationThe dentist measures the space between the gums and teeth (pocket depth) and checks for bleeding and gum recession.
  2. X-raysX-rays show the level of the bone that supports the teeth.
  3. Professional cleaningScaling, and where needed deep cleaning of the root surfaces (root planing), removes plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.
  4. Re-evaluationThe gums are checked again after healing to see how they have responded.
  5. Maintenance or next stepsRegular maintenance visits are planned. Gum surgery is discussed only if deep pockets remain.

Periodontal Treatments: frequently asked questions

Have another question? Message us on WhatsApp.

Can gum disease be cured?
Early gum disease (gingivitis) can usually be reversed. Periodontitis can be controlled with treatment and regular maintenance, but bone that has already been lost does not usually grow back on its own.
Does deep cleaning hurt?
Local anaesthesia can be used to keep you comfortable. Mild tenderness or sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles.
How many visits will I need?
This depends on how advanced the gum disease is. Deep cleaning may be done in one or more sessions, followed by a review visit.
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Bleeding is often an early sign of gum inflammation. It should be checked rather than ignored, and you should not stop brushing because of it.
Will I need gum surgery?
Most patients are first treated without surgery. Surgery is considered only if deep pockets remain after cleaning, and only after it is explained to you.
How often should I come back?
After treatment, regular maintenance visits are planned. How often depends on your gum condition.
