What is Dental Crowns & Bridges?

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged, heavily filled or root-canal-treated tooth to protect and strengthen it.

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Crowns can also be placed on dental implants. Common materials include metal-ceramic, zirconia and all-ceramic, and the dentist will advise which suits each tooth.

Why it may be needed

  • Cracked, broken or heavily worn teeth
  • Teeth weakened by large fillings
  • Back teeth after root canal treatment
  • A missing tooth with healthy teeth either side
  • Discoloured or misshapen teeth

How is it done?

A general outline. Your own steps depend on your examination and are explained to you before treatment.

  1. ExaminationThe tooth or gap is assessed, including an X-ray if needed.
  2. Tooth preparationUnder local anaesthesia, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown.
  3. Impression or scanA precise impression or scan is taken so the crown or bridge can be made.
  4. TemporaryA temporary crown protects the tooth while the final one is made.
  5. Fitting & reviewThe final crown or bridge is checked for fit and bite, then fixed in place.

Dental Crowns & Bridges: frequently asked questions

Have another question? Message us on WhatsApp.

How many visits does a crown take?
Usually at least two: one to prepare the tooth and take the impression, and one to fit the final crown.
Is getting a crown painful?
The tooth is numbed during preparation. Some tenderness or sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles.
Crown, bridge or implant: which do I need?
It depends on the condition of the tooth or gap, the neighbouring teeth, the bone and your preferences. The dentist will explain the suitable options.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
With good care and regular check-ups they can last many years, but their lifespan varies and cannot be guaranteed.
How do I clean under a bridge?
Special floss threaders or small interdental brushes are used. The dentist or hygienist will show you how.
Can a crown fall off?
It is uncommon, but it can happen. Keep the crown and contact the clinic so it can be checked.
