What is Gum & Flap Surgery?

When gum disease has created deep pockets around the teeth, cleaning alone may not reach the bacteria and tartar on the roots. Flap surgery is a periodontal procedure in which the gum is gently lifted back so the dentist can see and clean the root surfaces directly.

Where needed, the underlying bone is smoothed or reshaped, and the gum is then repositioned and stitched. Other gum surgeries may be discussed depending on your individual situation.

Why it may be needed

  • Deep gum pockets that remain after deep cleaning
  • Tartar and bacteria deep below the gum line
  • Advanced gum disease with bone loss
  • Gum problems that need to be treated before implants or other dental work

How is it done?

A general outline. Your own steps depend on your examination and are explained to you before treatment.

  1. AssessmentPocket measurements and X-rays are reviewed after initial gum treatment.
  2. Planning & consentThe dentist explains why surgery is advised, what it involves, the alternatives and recovery, before you decide.
  3. ProcedureUnder local anaesthesia, the gum is lifted, the roots are cleaned and the area is reshaped if needed.
  4. StitchingThe gum is repositioned and secured with stitches.
  5. Healing & reviewStitches are usually reviewed or removed after about one to two weeks, followed by maintenance visits.

Gum & Flap Surgery: frequently asked questions

Have another question? Message us on WhatsApp.

Does everyone with gum disease need surgery?
No. Most patients are treated first with professional and deep cleaning. Surgery is considered only for areas that do not respond, and only after a clinical examination.
Is flap surgery painful?
It is done under local anaesthesia, so the area is numb. Discomfort and swelling afterwards are expected for a few days and are usually managed with the medicines the dentist advises.
How long does the procedure take?
This depends on how many teeth are involved. The dentist will give you an estimate during planning.
How long is recovery?
Many people return to normal routines within a few days. The gums continue to heal over the following weeks, and stitches are usually reviewed after one to two weeks.
What can I eat afterwards?
Soft, cool foods are generally easier at first. The dentist will give you specific instructions for your procedure.
Will I need follow-up visits?
Yes. Regular maintenance visits are important to keep the gums healthy after surgery.
