What is Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over the following weeks to months, the bone bonds with the implant surface. The implant then supports a crown, a bridge or, in some cases, a denture.

Because an implant is anchored in the bone, it does not rely on the neighbouring teeth for support, unlike a conventional bridge.

Why it may be needed

  • One or more missing teeth
  • Difficulty chewing because of gaps
  • A loose or uncomfortable denture that needs more stability
  • Gaps that affect confidence when smiling or speaking
  • Neighbouring teeth drifting into a gap

How is it done?

A general outline. Your own steps depend on your examination and are explained to you before treatment.

  1. Consultation & assessmentYour medical history, teeth, gums and bite are examined, along with your expectations.
  2. Scans & planningX-rays or a 3D scan show the bone height, width and nearby structures so the implant position can be planned.
  3. Implant placementUnder local anaesthesia, the implant is placed in the jawbone. Bone grafting is discussed first if extra bone is needed.
  4. HealingThe bone is given time to bond with the implant, commonly a few months. A temporary tooth may be possible in some cases.
  5. Final tooth & follow-upA custom crown or bridge is fitted on the implant, followed by regular reviews.

Dental Implants: frequently asked questions

Have another question? Message us on WhatsApp.

Is getting an implant painful?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, so the area is numb during treatment. Some discomfort and swelling afterwards is common and is usually managed with the medicines the dentist advises.
How long does the whole process take?
It varies from person to person. Placing the implant is one appointment, but healing before the final crown commonly takes a few months. Bone grafting, if needed, can add time.
Am I a suitable candidate?
Suitability depends on your general health, gum health and the amount of bone available. Smoking and some medical conditions can affect healing. The dentist assesses this at the consultation.
How long do dental implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, implants can last many years. As with any treatment, long-term results cannot be guaranteed and depend on individual factors.
What if I don't have enough bone?
Bone grafting or other options may be possible. The dentist will explain whether this applies to you after reviewing your scan.
Can I get a temporary tooth while it heals?
In some cases, yes. Whether this is possible depends on the site and your bite, and the dentist will discuss it during planning.
